One of the things that I am passionate about is organic gardening, and it is that time of year again. I know snow is still swirling in some parts of the US, but in Texas, Spring is in the air. After not gardening for the last seven years, it looks like I will be starting over. I decided this is a great opportunity to document the process and progress for myself, and any others who are learning to garden in Texas.
There are a lot of great YouTube videos about organic gardening, urban homesteading, sustainable agriculture, etc., but not many dealt with intensive organic gardening in a suburban yard in Texas. The videos from BBC by Monty Don and Alan Titchmarsh are excellent; however, gardening in Texas bears little resemblance to the English countryside. Regarding techniques, John at GrowingYourGreens.com provides excellent how-to and motivational videos, but he is gardening in California. There are also a lot of video blogs from the midwest, but those just make me homesick. Most of the videos from fellow-Texans do not have the limitations of a 1/5 acre suburban lot, and may or may not be organic, so not much help to me. Hopefully my gardening vlog will help and inspire others who live in less than ideal climates to take up the challenge to grow organic and eat local (can’t get much more local than your own backyard!).
In addition to my gardening passion, I always strive to be a lifelong learner, and in the past 48 hours I have learned a lot about filming video, Windows Live MovieMaker, and uploading video to YouTube. I am certain my next twelve-minute vlog won’t take two days to put together.
So, if you are interested in gardening, or want to learn more about me, check out my video and let me know what you think. I still have a lot to learn!
